I used to be ashamed of my own voice.
Less than a year ago, I was convinced my accent was a liability. Then I learned that being bilingual is a skill only 43% of the world's population has. It stopped being something to hide. It became my superpower, and the foundation of everything I now teach.
The story
From a NICU hallway to a nervous system I finally understood.
I'm Dominican, and I've spent the last 14 years building a life and a career in the United States, learning, in real time, what it costs to lead in a second language and a culture that wasn't built with me in mind.
Some of my hardest days weren't in a boardroom. They were in a hospital hallway, sitting with fear I didn't have language for yet, the same fear that later showed up every time I had to speak up, raise a price, or take a risk I knew I was capable of. I didn't have a strategy problem. I had a nervous system that had learned, over decades, that visibility wasn't safe.
What changed things wasn't more motivation. It was understanding the actual mechanism, what neuroscience says happens in the body in the moment before we freeze, and pairing that with a truth I'd known my whole life but never applied to this: renewal isn't just a nice idea. It's a process. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2) turned out to be a precise description of how change actually happens, not a verse to quote and move past.
That combination, faith, neuroscience, and leadership, is what I now bring to every leader and every team I work with.
